Former MP William Wragg Opens Up About Westminster Honeytrap Scandal and Mental Health Struggles
In a recent and deeply personal revelation, former Tory MP William Wragg has spoken out about the profound psychological impact of his involvement in the Westminster "honeytrap" scandal. The incident, which led to a media storm and Wragg’s subsequent departure from the Conservative Party, has exposed the darker side of political life and the vulnerabilities that even those in positions of power can experience.
Wragg, who represented Hazel Grove, found himself at the center of a scandal after disclosing the phone numbers of several colleagues to a man he met on the dating app Grindr. The man, who went by the alias “Charlie,” turned out to be part of a malicious scheme that targeted Westminster insiders, including MPs, staffers, and journalists, with flirtatious and sometimes explicit messages. The incident quickly escalated into a police investigation, with allegations suggesting that as many as 12 men with ties to Westminster had been targeted.

In an emotional interview with The Sunday Times , Wragg recounted the overwhelming sense of guilt and horror he felt after the story broke. He admitted to struggling with severe mental health issues, revealing that he had even contemplated suicide in the immediate aftermath. “The night after the story was published, I didn’t get any sleep. I felt awful. Just an intense guilt, but again, not knowing what had actually happened, or why, or what the motive was behind what this person had done,” he shared. This intense emotional turmoil eventually led him to seek help at a hospital, where he was admitted due to concerns over his mental well-being.
Wragg’s experience sheds light on the immense pressure faced by public figures, who are often expected to maintain an image of strength and resilience despite personal challenges. He expressed regret over his actions, particularly in handing over his colleagues’ contact information, which he did after feeling “compromised” and “threatened” by the scammer. Despite this, Wragg emphasized that his intent was never malicious, and he has since apologized to those affected.
Reflecting on the broader implications of his experience, Wragg highlighted the need for vigilance in the digital age, where online interactions can lead to unforeseen consequences. He warned against the increasing prevalence of such schemes, exacerbated by advances in technology like deepfakes and AI. Wragg’s story serves as a sobering reminder of the potential dangers lurking online and the importance of mental health awareness, particularly for those in high-pressure environments like politics.
As Wragg continues to cope with the fallout from the scandal, his story has sparked important conversations about the intersection of digital security, mental health, and the pressures of public life. His openness about his struggles underscores the need for greater support systems for those who find themselves in similar situations, both within and outside of the political sphere.
