Major Gas Leak in Longueuil Shuts Down Boulevard Taschereau and Causes Power Outages
Earlier today, a significant gas leak in Longueuil led to the complete closure of Boulevard Taschereau, causing widespread disruptions in the area. The incident occurred near the intersection of Chemin du Coteau-Rouge, prompting local authorities to take swift action to ensure public safety.
The gas leak, which was reported around 9:15 AM, forced the Longueuil Agglomeration Police Department to close Boulevard Taschereau in both directions between Boulevard Curé-Poirier and the access point to the Jacques-Cartier Bridge. The road closure is expected to last for an undetermined amount of time, causing significant traffic disruptions in the area. Motorists are being advised to avoid the affected region and seek alternative routes.

Emergency response teams, including personnel from Énergir and the Longueuil Fire Safety Service, are on-site to address the situation. According to Annie Bilodeau, the division chief of the Longueuil Agglomeration Fire Safety Service, the leak was caused by a rupture in an eight-inch gas pipe. Efforts are currently underway to control the leak and restore normal conditions as quickly as possible.
The gas leak has also triggered substantial power outages in the surrounding areas. Approximately 20,000 customers in Longueuil and nearby Saint-Lambert have been left without electricity due to the incident. Hydro-Québec has confirmed that the power cut was a preventive measure to avoid potential hazards. However, the good news is that power restoration is expected to begin soon, with some areas regaining electricity within minutes.
Despite the severity of the situation, no injuries have been reported so far. Authorities have emphasized the importance of public cooperation and patience as they work to resolve the issue. The return to normalcy is anticipated within the next four to six hours, depending on the progress of the repairs.
Residents and commuters are urged to stay informed through official channels and avoid the affected area until further notice. The situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
In the meantime, the focus remains on ensuring public safety and minimizing the impact of this significant disruption. Emergency services continue to work tirelessly to restore normal conditions and bring relief to those affected by the gas leak and power outages.
