Plans for Andy Murray Legacy Center in Dunblane Scrapped Amidst Rising Costs
In a disappointing turn of events, the ambitious plan to build a £20 million tennis center near Sir Andy Murray's hometown of Dunblane has been officially abandoned. The project, spearheaded by Judy Murray, was intended to serve as a lasting tribute to the Murray family's contributions to tennis and provide a state-of-the-art facility for the community. However, mounting costs and persistent planning challenges have rendered the project unviable.
For over a decade, Judy Murray and her team worked tirelessly to bring this vision to life. The Park of Keir project, which was meant to include tennis, padel, and pickleball courts, a six-hole golf course, a four-star hotel, and even a museum and restaurant, faced significant hurdles from the start. Despite securing a £5 million pledge from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and support from notable figures like Billie Jean King, opposition from local campaigners and issues related to green belt land complicated the project's progress.

The Murray Play Foundation, the charity overseeing the initiative, cited several key factors that led to the project's cancellation. A spokesperson for the foundation expressed deep regret over the decision, acknowledging the decade-long struggle against indifference and opposition.
Local resistance was particularly focused on the environmental impact of developing green belt land, with critics arguing that the project’s housing component would harm the local landscape and ancient woodlands. Scottish Green MSP Mark Ruskell, a vocal opponent, praised the preservation of Park of Keir’s green space, highlighting concerns about the project’s exclusivity and the impact on local infrastructure.
Despite this setback, the Murray family remains committed to supporting tennis in the UK. Judy Murray expressed frustration at the lack of a tangible legacy for Scottish tennis, especially in light of her son Andy's remarkable career. Murray himself reacted to the news with a terse comment on social media, reflecting the surprise and disappointment many feel.
