
Rescue Mission Underway After Bayesian Yacht Sinks Off Sicily
A major rescue operation is currently taking place off the coast of Sicily following the tragic sinking of the British-flagged superyacht Bayesian early on Monday morning. The vessel was caught in freak weather conditions, leading to the disaster. So far, it has been confirmed that one person, the yacht's cook, has died, with his body recovered by Sicily’s civil protection agency. While 15 people have been rescued, six individuals remain unaccounted for.
The search and rescue teams, including specialist divers from the Italian fire brigade, have resumed their efforts to locate those still missing. The vessel was carrying a total of 22 people, comprising 12 passengers and 10 crew members, when it encountered severe weather conditions around 4:30 a.m. local time.

Among the missing are several prominent individuals. British technology tycoon Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch, and Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer are among those unaccounted for. The yacht was reportedly hosting a celebration for Lynch, who was recently acquitted of fraud charges in the U.S. Lynch, known for founding the successful software company Autonomy, was facing significant legal battles related to the company’s sale to Hewlett-Packard.
Hannah Lynch, who had just completed her A-levels and secured a place at Oxford University, is also missing. She was reportedly on the trip with her family. Jonathan Bloomer, a close friend of Lynch and the chairman of Morgan Stanley International and insurance firm Hiscox, is also among the missing. His wife, Judy Bloomer, who is a well-known advocate for women’s health and a trustee of the Eve Appeal charity, is likewise unaccounted for. The charity expressed deep sorrow and concern for the missing couple.
Several individuals have been rescued, including Charlotte Golunski, who was traveling with her partner and their infant daughter. Golunski, a partner at Mike Lynch’s firm Invoke Capital, described the harrowing experience of holding her daughter above water to keep her safe until help arrived. Both Golunski and her daughter, along with her partner James Emsley, were rescued. Another survivor is Ayla Ronald, a senior associate at Clifford Chance who was part of Lynch’s legal team in the U.S. trial.
The ongoing rescue efforts are crucial as divers and emergency teams continue their search in challenging conditions. The incident has shocked many, especially given the high-profile nature of some of the passengers and the scale of the disaster. The focus now is on locating the missing individuals and understanding the full extent of the tragedy.
