Riverfire 2024: Your Ultimate Guide to the Spectacle
Get ready, Brisbane! Riverfire 2024 is set to light up the sky with its dazzling fireworks display and thrilling RAAF air show, making it one of the most anticipated events of the year. This spectacular celebration will take place on Saturday, August 31, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and marks the grand opening of the Brisbane Festival, a vibrant three-week celebration of arts and culture running from August 31 to September 21.
The highlight of Riverfire is undoubtedly the fireworks, which will illuminate the city from 7:05 p.m. to 7:25 p.m. The pyrotechnics will be launched from various rooftops and bridges across Brisbane, promising a breathtaking visual experience. Over 30 dedicated crew members have spent around 1,500 hours preparing more than 12 tonnes of fireworks for this year's show.
But the excitement begins well before the fireworks. The RAAF air show is scheduled to start at 4:55 p.m., featuring impressive flyovers by the C-17A Globemaster and the F/A-18F Super Hornets. These aerial displays will provide a thrilling prelude to the evening's festivities.
If you're planning to catch the fireworks, you'll want to choose your viewing spot wisely. Some of the best locations include South Bank Parklands, Kangaroo Point Cliffs, Howard Smith Wharves, Victoria Bridge, Wilson Outlook Reserve, and the City Botanic Gardens. Note that the fenced area at South Bank Parklands opens at 9 a.m. and will close once it reaches capacity. For those with access requirements, an accessible viewing platform for 300 people will be available at Kangaroo Point Cliffs.

The event promises more than just fireworks and planes. Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fashion Freak Show will be on at the South Bank Piazza from August 30 to September 15, offering a world-class cabaret production celebrating 50 years of pop culture. Additionally, the Brisbane Serenades return on September 21 with Pasifika Made, celebrating Pacific Islands culture through dance, music, and storytelling. The day will also feature the Common People Dance Eisteddfods, a lively dance competition showcasing the best in local talent.
One of the most exciting additions this year is a mesmerizing drone show. Hundreds of drones will take to the sky at South Bank and Queens Wharf, creating a vibrant, multicolored display that will highlight First Nations Dreamtime stories, including the Rainbow Serpent.
With all this excitement, it’s crucial to plan your travel in advance. Major roads, bridges, and river routes will be closed or restricted. Expect significant congestion in South Brisbane, Fortitude Valley, and Kangaroo Point. Victoria Bridge will be closed from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Story Bridge from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and the Neville Bonner Bridge will be closed from 9 a.m. Be aware that the Brisbane River will be closed to vessels from 5 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.
Public transport is the most reliable way to get around during the event. TransLink will provide extra services and free bus and train travel around South Bank and Brisbane City from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. However, CityCat and CityHopper ferries will not operate between 6:45 p.m. and 7:45 p.m., so plan accordingly.
Finally, be mindful of what you bring to the event. Bikes, scooters, drones, and glass containers are not permitted in South Bank Parklands. Security will be conducting bag checks, and any prohibited items will be confiscated.
So, whether you’re planning to watch the fireworks, enjoy the air show, or take part in the various activities, Riverfire 2024 promises to be an unforgettable experience. Get ready to celebrate Brisbane’s vibrant arts scene, enjoy thrilling performances, and witness a spectacular night sky come alive with color and sound.
