"We were 21 years old, and I told her, ‘We’re either going to date, or I’m not going to see you for five years because I’ve been in love with you since I was 16,’” Rhett shares. Rhett admits that these years were incredibly tough. "I’d go to Uganda and be husband and dad, then come back to America and focus on shows and music," he says. Both Rhett and Lauren felt the strain, reaching breaking points where they felt like something had to give. Despite these challenges, giving up was never an option for them. "The easiest thing to do is quit," Rhett reflects. "But when you don’t and you keep grinding it out, you become stronger."
Their perseverance has paid off. Rhett and Lauren’s relationship is now a testament to the strength of their commitment. They have been open about their struggles, shedding light on the reality behind their seemingly perfect life. Rhett acknowledges the pressure of maintaining a flawless image on social media but emphasizes the importance of authenticity. "At 26, it was nerve-racking to portray anything less than ‘couple goals,’” he says. “Now, there’s no pressure to pretend we’re something we’re not. We’re normal people dealing with the same stuff everyone else does.”
Balancing fame and family continues to be a challenge for Rhett, but he remains dedicated to both. He advises other couples facing difficulties to embrace complete honesty. “Darkness cannot live where the light is,” he asserts. Rhett’s advice extends to younger artists as well, urging them to marry their true love if they find them early on. “Make that person your centerpiece because that’s your rock for the rest of your life,” he says.
