On August 22, 2024, the football world was struck by a profound tragedy when Juan Izquierdo, a promising defender for Club Nacional de Football, collapsed during a Copa Libertadores match against Sao Paulo. Izquierdo, only 27 years old, was rushed to the hospital following his sudden collapse on the field. Despite the valiant efforts of medical staff, he passed away on August 27 at the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in São Paulo.

Juan Izquierdo’s death has cast a shadow over the football community. The official statement from Nacional expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. The club declared, "With deep pain and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo. Our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and everyone affected. The cause of death was reported as "death by brain damage following a cardiac arrest," with the hospital providing details that Izquierdo suffered a cardiac arrhythmia, which led to a heart attack and subsequent brain damage. The incident occurred in the 83rd minute of the match at the Morumbi Stadium, during the Libertadores' Round of 16 clash. Izquierdo had entered the game as a substitute for the injured Coates and tragically collapsed on the field. Despite immediate medical intervention, he could not be revived.

The football community has expressed its grief, with CONMEBOL also mourning Izquierdo's passing. Their statement read, "CONMEBOL deeply regrets the loss of Juan Izquierdo, the Uruguayan player from Nacional. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace."

Izquierdo’s career began in Montevideo, Uruguay, on July 4, 1997. Over the years, he played for several clubs including C. A. Cerro, C. A. Peñarol, Mdeo. Wanderers F. C., C. A. San Luis, Club Nacional de Football, and Liverpool Fútbol Club. His promising career was marked by dedication and skill, making his sudden death a significant loss to the sport.
