UEFA Europa League Draw 2024/25: Tottenham Hotspur's New Challenge Awaits

As the excitement builds around the UEFA Europa League, Tottenham Hotspur is gearing up for a new chapter in the competition. The draw for the 2024/25 season is set to take place on Friday, August 30th, at noon UK time, and this marks a significant shift in how the tournament will unfold.

For the first time since the 2020/21 season, Spurs will be making their return to the Europa League, but the format has undergone a major overhaul. Gone are the days of the traditional group stages where teams were divided into groups of four. Instead, this season introduces a 36-team league stage. Each team will play eight matches, facing eight different opponents—four at home and four away. The top eight teams in this new league format will advance directly to the round of 16, while those finishing from ninth to 24th will enter the knockout round play-offs. Here, the winners of eight two-legged ties will secure their spots in the last 16.

In preparation for the draw, teams have been categorized into four pots based on their UEFA coefficients. Tottenham Hotspur finds itself in Pot 1, which is an advantageous position as it ensures they will face two teams from each of the other pots. The draw will be semi-automated, with physical balls drawn to match teams from different pots. The automated software will then determine which matches will be home or away. Importantly, teams cannot face opponents from their own country, so Spurs won’t be drawn against fellow Premier League side Manchester United. Furthermore, each team can only play a maximum of two sides from any one country.

The potential opponents for Spurs are intriguing. In Pot 1, teams like Roma, Porto, Rangers, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Lazio are notable. Pot 2 includes Olympiacos and Lyon, while Pot 3 and 4 feature a mix of formidable opponents including Malmo, Athletic Club, Hoffenheim, Nice, Twente, and Ludogorets Razgrad, among others. Pot to be determined will add an extra layer of unpredictability, with teams like Fenerbahce, Galatasaray, and Ajax potentially joining the fray.

The Europa League matches will commence on September 25-26, 2024, with the final matchday scheduled for January 30, 2025. The knockout rounds will follow in early February 2025, culminating in the final at the Estadio de San Mames in Bilbao, Spain, on May 21, 2025.

As Spurs prepare for this revamped and exciting format, fans will be eagerly awaiting the draw to see which teams will challenge them on their journey through the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League. With a fresh structure and a host of potential opponents, this season promises to be a thrilling ride for Tottenham and its supporters.
