Auston Matthews Skates but Will Miss Second Consecutive Preseason Game
Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews made headlines after skating during an optional session on Thursday, yet he remains sidelined for the team's upcoming preseason game against the Montreal Canadiens. Matthews, the 2022 Hart Trophy winner and Maple Leafs' captain, left practice earlier in the week due to what head coach Craig Berube referred to as an "upper-body issue." While this raised concerns among fans, Berube was quick to reassure everyone that the injury is not serious. Matthews’ absence is precautionary, and all signs point to him being back on the ice soon.
Matthews, 27, had an impressive showing last season, recording 69 goals and 107 points across 81 games. His leadership and skill were instrumental in the Maple Leafs' playoff push, where he added a goal and four assists in five games. The 6-foot-3 center was officially named the 26th captain in Maple Leafs history in August, following in the footsteps of John Tavares. With his track record, it’s no surprise that Matthews is expected to play a pivotal role as the Maple Leafs look to build on last season's momentum.

While Matthews rests, the Maple Leafs will continue evaluating their roster, giving more time to prospects like Easton Cowan, who will make his third consecutive preseason appearance. The 19-year-old Cowan, drafted 28th overall in 2023, has yet to record a point in the preseason but remains one to watch after an outstanding season in the Ontario Hockey League, where he posted 96 points.
On the other hand, forward Steven Lorentz, a 28-year-old veteran center, is set to make his debut with the Maple Leafs against the Canadiens after joining the team on a player tryout. Lorentz had been recovering from his own upper-body injury, but his return to the ice marks a significant step for him as he seeks to secure a spot on the Maple Leafs’ roster. Last season, he was part of the Florida Panthers’ historic Stanley Cup run, contributing key moments to the team's success.
Matthews' absence, while notable, is unlikely to dampen the excitement around the Maple Leafs as they work through their preseason preparations. With several players fighting for roster spots and young talent emerging, the Maple Leafs are gearing up for what promises to be an exciting and competitive 2024-2025 NHL season.
