'Beetlejuice 2' Haunts the Box Office with $13 Million Opening Night
It looks like Michael Keaton’s infamous ghoul is back to cast his spell at the box office. The much-anticipated sequel, "Beetlejuice 2," directed by the visionary Tim Burton, has made an impressive $13 million during its Thursday night previews. This marks a thrilling return for the cult classic that first captivated audiences in 1988.
As we dive into the weekend, "Beetlejuice 2" is projected to achieve an opening haul between $100 million and $110 million, a figure that’s set to make it one of the highest-grossing September releases ever. This debut is especially notable considering the film's production budget of $100 million. Warner Bros. is cautiously predicting a slightly lower opening of around $90 million, but many industry experts believe the film will surpass expectations and cross the $100 million threshold.

This sequel not only resurrects the iconic character but also aims to join the ranks of notable September releases. It could rival the figures of 2017’s "It," which opened to $123 million, and 2019’s "It: Chapter 2," with a $91 million debut. If "Beetlejuice 2" hits its high-end projections, it will indeed be shoulder to shoulder with these blockbuster hits.
The film sees Michael Keaton reprise his role as the mischievous spirit Beetlejuice, joined once again by Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz. This time around, Lydia is not just dealing with supernatural phenomena but is also running a talk show that delves into the afterlife. When Beetlejuice makes his grand return, the Deetz family must come together to stave off chaos that threatens both the living and the dead.
New additions to the cast include Jenna Ortega, who plays Lydia’s daughter Astrid, and a star-studded lineup featuring Justin Theroux, Willem Dafoe, and Monica Bellucci. Set 36 years after the original, the sequel promises a fresh take while paying homage to the elements that made the original a beloved classic.
The original "Beetlejuice" was a runaway success, earning $75 million against a $15 million budget and securing its place as one of the top-grossing films of its year. It also won an Academy Award for Best Makeup and spawned a Broadway musical, an animated series, and a lasting cultural impact. With high anticipation and strong early numbers, "Beetlejuice 2" seems poised to continue that legacy, casting a nostalgic spell on audiences old and new.
