Scottish Skier Tragically Dies in Avalanche While in Argentina
In a devastating turn of events, a Scottish woman has lost her life in an avalanche while skiing in Argentina. The tragedy occurred on Wednesday, September 4th, 2024, on the slopes of Cerro López near the city of Bariloche. The victim, Andrea Marshall, a 27-year-old originally from Dunoon, was skiing with friends when the avalanche struck around 5:15 p.m. local time. Her body was recovered by rescue teams around 11 p.m. the same evening.
Andrea was in Argentina as part of a ski instructor exchange program, and she had been working at a ski center in Bariloche. Reports indicate that she was living in the Aran Valley of the Spanish Pyrenees at the time of the incident. Andrea, a former student of Dunoon Grammar School, was known for her passion for skiing and mountaineering, which she often shared through her social media accounts.

The avalanche, classified as a D3—considered "very large" and capable of burying a vehicle or destroying a small structure—hit the area where Andrea and her companions were skiing. The two survivors of this tragic event, Augusto Gruttadauria from Cordoba and local resident Christian Erauskin, were both treated for hypothermia after being rescued. They had spent several harrowing hours under the snow, with Gruttadauria enduring a grueling 15 hours before being found.
Initial confusion surrounded Andrea's nationality, with some reports mistakenly identifying her as Irish. However, Argentine authorities have confirmed that she was indeed British. The Bariloche Alpine Club Rescue Commission has suggested that the avalanche might have been triggered by the skiers themselves, although a full investigation is ongoing.
The British Foreign Office has expressed its condolences and confirmed that they are in contact with local authorities to support Andrea’s family during this difficult time. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with skiing in avalanche-prone areas and the importance of safety measures and awareness in such environments.
