Beloved Organic Grocery Store on Whyte Avenue Faces Closure Amid Financial Struggles
Earth's General Store, a beloved fixture on Whyte Avenue in Edmonton for over 33 years, is facing the unfortunate prospect of closing its doors this coming Sunday. Unless the owners can raise an urgent $150,000, the store that has provided organic and sustainable products to the community will no longer be able to operate. The financial pressures brought on by inflation and rising food costs have taken their toll, both on the store and its loyal customers.
Rebecca MacLeod, president of the Ethical Community Organizations of Edmonton, explained how economic pressures are influencing consumer behavior. As food prices climb, people are making more conscious decisions about where to spend their money, and unfortunately, many are drifting away from organic stores like Earth's General Store. There’s a common misconception that such stores are inaccessible or unaffordable, which further compounds the issue.

The news of the store’s impending closure has saddened many in the community. One customer recounted how she bought cloth diapers for her son at the store’s old location when she was pregnant, illustrating the intimate relationship the store has fostered over the years.
In a last-ditch effort to save the store, the owners are not seeking donations from the public but instead are looking for a partner or investor. According to MacLeod, the team has explored every possible avenue, but they believe that raising $150,000 by Sunday is the only viable solution to keep the store open. She added that while discussions about potential funding are ongoing, time is running out.
As Sunday approaches, Earth's General Store is preparing to say its goodbyes to the community, inviting customers to visit one last time to bid farewell. This closing marks not only the end of a business but the loss of a local institution that has been a cornerstone of sustainable living and organic products in Edmonton for over three decades.
