Body of Missing 8-Year-Old Found by Dive Team Near Greenville County School
A tragic incident unfolded in Greenville County, South Carolina, as authorities confirmed the discovery of the body of 8-year-old Lionel Ramirez Cervantes, a child who had gone missing earlier in the day from Bells Crossing Elementary School. The Greenville County Sheriff's Office had launched an intensive search after Lionel, a non-verbal child with autism, was last seen near the school's playground at around 11:10 a.m. The search lasted for several hours before a dive team located his body in a body of water near Lenox Lake Drive, close to the school, around 3 p.m. on Thursday, September 12, 2024.
The situation rapidly gained urgency as school staff and law enforcement realized that Lionel had wandered away from the campus, escaping through a fence near the playground. The school was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure, while deputies, aided by K-9 units, combed through the surrounding neighborhoods in a desperate attempt to locate the missing boy. Several law enforcement agencies, including the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), the FBI, and Foothills Search and Rescue, joined the search efforts. Video surveillance confirmed Lionel's movements as he left the school grounds.

Complicating the search was the fact that Lionel was non-verbal, making communication difficult. Despite the combined efforts of nearly 100 deputies and the emotional investment of his family, the discovery of Lionel's body in the pond brought a heartbreaking conclusion to the search.

Pastor Heindrich Shirley of Celebration Church in Simpsonville has offered a space for community members to gather and pray, inviting everyone to attend the church in solidarity during this difficult time.
