Christian McCaffrey Injury Update: Star 49ers RB Could Miss Several Weeks After Germany Trip
There’s been some tough news recently for San Francisco 49ers fans concerning star running back Christian McCaffrey. After a trip to Germany for specialist treatment, it appears that McCaffrey could be sidelined for an extended period, possibly until Week 12 or 13. The news comes as a significant blow to the team, who have already been without their dynamic playmaker for the first few weeks of the 2024 season.
McCaffrey, known for his explosive ability to flip the field, has been dealing with a calf and Achilles injury that dates back to early August, just a week into training camp. Since then, he’s been largely absent from the field, missing all preseason games and being placed on injured reserve after Week 1. The 49ers offense, while still productive, clearly misses the game-breaking potential that McCaffrey brings. Despite Jordan Mason’s impressive performances—he’s second in the league in rushing yards—McCaffrey’s ability to turn even routine plays into massive gains is unmatched.

What’s concerning is that McCaffrey’s injury now appears to be more severe than initially thought. According to Dr. Kenton Fibel, a specialist consulted for the case, McCaffrey may have microscopic tears in his Achilles tendon, which haven’t responded well to standard treatment. As a result, the team opted for McCaffrey to seek advanced treatment in Germany, where orthobiologic procedures are often used to aid recovery. Unfortunately, this means the recovery timeline could extend to a couple of months, rather than just a few weeks.
Kyle Shanahan, head coach of the 49ers, mentioned that he hasn’t received any definitive updates on McCaffrey’s condition, but he remains hopeful that the injury won’t keep the star running back out for the rest of the season. If McCaffrey’s recovery does align with Dr. Fibel’s estimation, a return around Week 12 or 13 seems likely. That would leave him with just under half the season to make an impact, assuming the recovery goes smoothly.
For now, the 49ers will have to continue to rely on their depth in the backfield, with Mason stepping up and Isaac Guerendo filling in as a backup. Although McCaffrey’s absence is undoubtedly a loss, the 49ers have shown resilience in adapting to adversity so far. Nonetheless, all eyes will be on McCaffrey’s recovery in the coming weeks as fans hope for a swift return.
