Diamond Shruumz Edibles Recalled Following FDA Investigation Linked to Two Possible Deaths
The recent recall of Diamond Shruumz edible products has caused significant concern, especially as two deaths may be linked to these items. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is actively investigating the case, following reports of serious illnesses and adverse reactions among consumers. As of August 30, 2024, 158 illnesses have been reported across 32 states, with 63 people hospitalized. As part of its investigation, the FDA tested multiple Diamond Shruumz products. The results revealed the presence of psychoactive substances such as 4-acetoxy-DMT, also known as psilacetin, which is closely related to the hallucinogenic drug psilocybin. Other concerning substances detected include kava-derived compounds like desmethoxyyangonin, dihydrokavain, and kavain. These compounds are known for their psychoactive effects, including sedation and loss of coordination, and have been linked to liver toxicity and cancer risks in studies conducted by the US National Toxicology Program.
Additionally, a prescription drug called pregabalin was found in several samples, further highlighting the potential dangers associated with Diamond Shruumz edibles. The FDA has declared kava and several of these substances as not "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) for food products, effectively making their inclusion in edibles illegal.
Consumers are strongly advised to avoid all Diamond Shruumz products, including their chocolate bars, gummies, and cones, which are now subject to a nationwide recall.
