Ex-Gov Aide Charged with Acting as Chinese Agent: A Deep Dive
In a significant legal development, Linda Sun, a former aide to New York governors Kathy Hochul and Andrew Cuomo, has been charged with acting as an agent of the Chinese government. This indictment marks a dramatic turn in the high-profile case and raises pressing questions about foreign influence and state-level integrity.
Sun, who served as Deputy Chief of Staff under Hochul and held various roles in Cuomo’s administration, faces multiple serious charges. The U.S. Attorney Breon Peace has announced that Sun is accused of violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), committing visa fraud, engaging in alien smuggling, and conspiring in money laundering. Her husband, Chris Hu, is also implicated, facing charges related to money laundering conspiracy, bank fraud, and misuse of identification. Federal investigators conducted a raid on their Long Island home in July, uncovering evidence linked to these allegations.
According to the indictment, Sun acted as an undisclosed agent for the Chinese government, with her husband allegedly facilitating millions in kickbacks for personal gain. Both Sun and Hu entered not guilty pleas in federal court, with Sun's bail set at $1.5 million and Hu’s at $500,000. They are restricted to travel within New York City, Long Island, Maine, and New Hampshire while awaiting further legal proceedings.

Prosecutors have detailed a complex web of alleged misconduct involving shell companies, iCloud accounts, and WeChat communications in Mandarin. They accuse Sun of using her position to block Taiwanese diplomatic efforts, ensuring that New York's official stance favored Chinese interests. For example, she reportedly obstructed a request from Taiwan’s representative for a congratulatory letter, which could have sparked political tensions.
Furthermore, Sun is said to have facilitated high-level meetings between Chinese officials and New York state representatives, while simultaneously working to ensure public praise for China’s aid during the COVID-19 pandemic. The indictment describes how Sun manipulated public messaging, including altering statements from Cuomo to favor China, and reportedly even arranged for luxury items like salted ducks from a Chinese official’s chef to be sent to her family.
Sun’s career in New York’s government spanned over a decade, starting with roles in various agencies before being appointed as Deputy Chief of Staff. Her employment was terminated in March 2023 upon discovery of misconduct, and state officials promptly reported her actions to law enforcement.
The case against Sun and Hu underscores ongoing concerns about foreign influence in U.S. politics and government. As the legal process unfolds, it will be crucial to monitor how these allegations impact perceptions of state-level governance and security. The next court session is scheduled for September 25, and both defendants are expected to continue their legal battle against the charges.
This case highlights the critical need for vigilance against foreign interference and the importance of maintaining the integrity of public offices. As more details emerge, the implications for both state and national security will become clearer.
