Flash Flood Warning and Windy Weather Ahead as Helene's Remnants Approach
As we head into Friday, be prepared for a wet and windy day as the remnants of Hurricane Helene move into our area. This storm is expected to bring steady rainfall and gusty winds, a stark contrast to the recent dry spell we’ve experienced. After weeks of drought, this much-needed rain will help alleviate dry conditions. However, it’s important to note that while tomorrow will be a rainy day, we’re not looking at severe weather in our immediate region, so it’s mostly a day to keep your umbrella and rain gear handy.
For residents of the Gulf Coast, though, the situation is more serious. Areas in Florida, particularly along the western coast and Big Bend, are already feeling the effects, with heavy rain and the potential for storm surges of up to 20 feet. This hurricane has also triggered several tornado warnings in parts of Florida, and those affected will likely see further flooding as the storm progresses. In fact, some areas could see up to a foot of rainfall, especially in the southern Appalachian Mountains, which raises concerns about flash flooding in that region.

Here in the Cincinnati area, the rain will start to move in late tonight, becoming more consistent by Friday morning. Expect lighter, steady rain through the morning hours, with heavier downpours possible in the afternoon. We may even hear a rumble of thunder or two, but again, severe storms aren’t anticipated. The rain will gradually taper off by evening, though showers may linger into the night.
As for total rainfall, our region is looking at about half an inch to an inch and a half. Winds will also be noticeable, with sustained speeds between 15 and 30 miles per hour, and gusts could reach up to 40 miles per hour in the afternoon. Friday will be blustery, so secure any outdoor items and prepare for a breezy, rainy day.
The unsettled weather will continue into the weekend as the remnants of Helene slowly clear out. Both Saturday and Sunday will see off-and-on rain, so keep those rain boots nearby. With temperatures holding in the upper 70s, it’s shaping up to be a cool, cloudy, and wet few days ahead.
Stay safe, and keep an eye on local weather updates as we monitor these changing conditions.
