Gunman Targeted Trump During Golf Outing: A Shocking Attempt
In a startling turn of events, a gunman lay hidden in the bushes for nearly 12 hours before attempting to target former President Donald Trump during an unscheduled round of golf at his West Palm Beach club. The incident has raised serious concerns about security and has stunned both locals and authorities.
On a seemingly routine Sunday afternoon, Trump, accompanied by real estate developer Steve Witkoff, arrived at the Trump International Golf Club. The former president was on the fifth fairway at around 1:31 PM EDT when a member of his Secret Service detail noticed a rifle protruding from the foliage near the sixth hole. The area, close to busy roads and Palm Beach International Airport, was quickly secured as Trump was evacuated safely.
Trump recounted hearing “probably four or five” shots in the distance, although investigators later confirmed that the gunman, Ryan Routh, did not actually fire any rounds. The Secret Service agent on duty responded swiftly, firing in the direction of the suspect who was concealed by the dense shrubbery and palm trees that frame the golf course. Routh, who had been lurking since the early hours of the morning, was equipped with an SKS-style semi-automatic rifle, two digital cameras, and a black plastic bag of food.

The suspect's escape was brief but dramatic. After abandoning his backpack and weapon, Routh fled in a black Nissan. A vigilant civilian captured his license plate and alerted authorities, leading to Routh’s arrest about 40 minutes later on Interstate 95. Bodycam footage from his arrest showed Routh appearing calm as he was handcuffed without resistance.
Routh, 58, appeared in a Palm Beach courtroom on Monday, facing charges of firearm possession by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. His criminal history includes a previous run-in with the FBI in 2019. Although his motive remains unclear, it has been noted that he had expressed support for Trump in the past, although his political views seemed to fluctuate.
The incident has sparked intense discussions in West Palm Beach. Residents are questioning how such a breach could occur, with some suggesting that the gunman may have had prior knowledge of Trump’s visit. Others, like Anka Palitz, suspect there might be a conspiracy involved, as Trump does not play golf every Sunday. The heightened security around the golf course has left many residents uneasy, reflecting broader concerns about public safety.
Despite the scare, Trump maintained his resolve, asserting that the attempt on his life has only strengthened his determination. He expressed gratitude to the Secret Service and reassured supporters of his continued engagement on the campaign trail. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has been prompted to request additional funds for Secret Service protection, acknowledging the need for increased security measures.
This unsettling episode underscores the constant risks faced by high-profile individuals and highlights the critical role of vigilant security protocols in safeguarding public figures. As investigations continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the volatility surrounding political figures in today’s charged environment.
