In a surprising development in the West Coast Eagles' coaching hunt, Collingwood assistant Hayden Skipworth has emerged as a leading contender for the coveted position. Despite being a name that wasn’t initially on the radar, the 41-year-old has suddenly become a focal point for the Eagles' selection panel. This shift in focus highlights Skipworth's impressive credentials and the strong impression he has made.
Skipworth's journey in football has been both diverse and distinguished. Since joining Collingwood's coaching team in 2020, he has played a pivotal role in the club's recent successes, including their 2023 premiership victory under the guidance of Craig McRae. His tenure at Collingwood also includes significant contributions to their talent development programs, where he helped nurture emerging talent through the club’s academy.

Before his time with Collingwood, Skipworth gained valuable experience with Essendon, where he was part of the coaching staff under former West Coast coach John Worsfold and led the Bombers' VFL team. His playing career was notable as well, with him representing both the Adelaide Crows and Essendon in a total of 55 games. This blend of playing and coaching experience makes Skipworth a well-rounded candidate for the role.
The Eagles' search for a new head coach has been ongoing since parting ways with Adam Simpson 70 days ago. The process has seen several high-profile candidates, including Eagles legend Dean Cox and Fremantle assistant Jaymie Graham, withdraw from consideration. The latest twist came with Ken Hinkley's name being linked to the role, but he remains at Port Adelaide for now.
Interim coach Jarrad Schofield, who was a favorite among supporters, has seen his chances diminish following a series of heavy losses towards the end of the season. While Schofield had expressed willingness to stay on as an assistant if not appointed head coach, the Eagles' focus seems to have shifted.
