Karolina Muchova Triumphs After Injury, Reaches US Open Quarterfinals
Karolina Muchova has made an impressive return to the US Open, clinching her place in the quarterfinals with a commanding 6-3, 6-3 victory over the No. 5 seed Jasmine Paolini. This win comes after a challenging year for Muchova, who had been sidelined for nearly ten months due to a severe wrist injury—a setback she described as the "worst and most serious" of her career.
Last year, Muchova dazzled the tennis world with her run to the US Open semifinals. It was a remarkable achievement that followed her first major final appearance at Roland Garros and saw her reach a career-high ranking of No. 8. However, the joy was short-lived as she underwent wrist surgery shortly after. The recovery process was grueling, and she only returned to competitive play in June of this year. Her appearance at the 2024 US Open marks just her sixth tournament since making her comeback.

Despite her ranking slipping to No. 52, Muchova has been unstoppable at Flushing Meadows. She has yet to lose a set, with her closest call being a dramatic second-round match against Naomi Osaka, where she saved triple set points. Muchova’s latest victory over Paolini is particularly notable as it is her first Top 5 win since her triumph over Aryna Sabalenka in the 2023 Cincinnati semifinals. This victory also propels her into her sixth Grand Slam quarterfinal.
In her on-court interview, Muchova reflected on her performance and the emotional weight of her return. She admitted to feeling nervous at the start of her match against Paolini, exacerbated by the windy conditions. Early on, she struggled with uncharacteristic errors and slow movement, falling behind 3-1. However, Muchova's resilience shone through as she regrouped and showcased her signature skills—her slices, drop shots, and reflex volleys—bringing the match back to 3-3. From then on, she dominated, only dropping five more points on her serve in the first set and just two in the second.
Muchova’s performance was marked by her solid net play and strategic shot-making. She won 11 of 14 net points and displayed her ability to convert crucial moments into decisive advantages. Despite Paolini’s valiant effort and her status as a formidable opponent with a strong forehand, Muchova's precision and consistency prevailed.
Looking ahead, Muchova is set to face either No. 22 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia or former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the semifinals. She holds a perfect 3-0 record against Haddad Maia and has yet to play Wozniacki. This sets the stage for a thrilling next chapter in her comeback story.
Karolina Muchova's return to top form is a testament to her determination and skill. As she advances to the US Open semifinals for the second consecutive year, fans are eagerly anticipating her next match and hoping to see her continue her remarkable journey back to the top of the sport.
