Knights Edge Dolphins for Final Spot; Bennett Slams Bunker
In an electrifying clash for the final spot in the NRL finals, the Newcastle Knights emerged victorious, securing their place with a 14-6 win over the Dolphins. The match, held before a packed crowd of 29,344, saw the Knights, led by the dynamic Kalyn Ponga, edge past their opponents in a dramatic conclusion to the regular season.
The game was not without controversy, as Dolphins coach Wayne Bennett vehemently criticized the NRL Bunker’s decision-making. The pivotal moment came in the first half when Dolphins fullback Trai Fuller seemed to have scored a try in the 22nd minute. However, the Bunker overruled the on-field decision, citing obstruction by Connelly Lemuelu on Jack Cogger. Bennett was furious, arguing that such calls could jeopardize teams' finals prospects and lamenting previous decisions that cost the Dolphins this season.
“Get rid of it,” Bennett declared, expressing his frustration with the Bunker system. “The refs used to get it wrong in the past but we got on with life. It’s crazy.” He criticized the decision that disallowed Fuller’s try, suggesting it was an example of a broader issue with how the game is officiated.

Despite the controversy, the Knights demonstrated resilience and skill throughout the match. Ponga was instrumental, contributing to both of Newcastle's tries and showcasing why he is a vital player for the Knights. His performance was particularly impressive considering he had to shake off an injury scare during the game. As Ponga grimaced from a shoulder stinger, the Knights' bench held their breath before he returned to action and guided his team to victory.
The game took a physical turn towards the end when Dolphins skipper Jesse Bromwich, in his final NRL appearance, was sin-binned for a high tackle on Ponga. The Knights capitalized on the opportunity, with Ponga’s contributions proving crucial in their bid to secure a finals berth. The Knights’ defense was also commendable, holding the Dolphins to just one try despite relentless pressure.
Looking ahead, the Knights are set to face the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville next Saturday. While the Cowboys will be the favorites, the Knights have shown they thrive under the underdog tag, having defied expectations to make the finals. Coach Adam O’Brien reflected on the season, noting, “No one had us in the eight to start the year. Everyone will keep us as the underdog. We like it that way.”
The Dolphins, despite their valiant efforts and a late try from Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, fell short of their finals aspirations. For Bennett, it was a frustrating end to his tenure with the Dolphins, marred by controversial officiating decisions.
As the NRL finals approach, the Knights will hope to carry their momentum into the postseason, while the Dolphins will reflect on what could have been. For now, Newcastle’s focus shifts to their upcoming clash, ready to face the challenge that lies ahead.
