Kyle Okposo Calls It a Career After 17 Seasons, Celebrates Cup Win with Panthers
Kyle Okposo, a distinguished forward who graced the NHL for 17 seasons, has officially announced his retirement. At 36 years old, Okposo is stepping away from the rink as a newly minted Stanley Cup champion, closing the chapter on a career that saw him become an integral part of the Florida Panthers’ historic 2024 season.
Okposo’s final year in the league was a blend of high stakes and remarkable moments. In the 2023-2024 season, he played 67 games split between the Panthers and Buffalo Sabres, contributing 22 points through 12 goals and 10 assists. Despite a quieter stint with Florida post-trade, Okposo's experience and leadership were key as the Panthers charged through the playoffs. Reflecting on his career, Okposo shared his deep appreciation for the game and the relationships he built along the way. "As I reflect on my NHL career, a few things stand out. I always tried to treat people with respect," Okposo noted in his retirement statement. "That respect was reciprocated throughout my interactions with most people in the hockey world. The relationships I cultivated with different people connected to the game are so important to the fabric of what makes hockey special."
The culmination of Okposo’s journey was a poignant moment in July, when he finally had his day with the Stanley Cup in his native Minnesota. Despite an international IT outage causing a delay in the public event, Okposo savored the time with his family, including a playful moment where his sons drank apple juice from the Cup. "It was just nice to sit down and reflect on the journey that I've been on for the last 30 years and take the time to soak in how much that trophy means to me," Okposo reminisced.
Drafted by the New York Islanders as the 7th overall pick in the 2006 NHL Draft, Okposo’s career was marked by steady performance and resilience. Over his 1,051 regular-season games, he amassed 614 points, including 242 goals and 372 assists. His playoff appearances, though limited to four occasions, were highlighted by his recent success with the Panthers.
As Okposo transitions to the next phase of his life, he expressed optimism about the future of hockey. "I believe the game is in a great place right now, but the possibilities are vast. I’m looking forward to continuing to contribute to the game as it reaches new heights," he said.
With his retirement, the NHL bids farewell to a player who not only demonstrated skill and perseverance on the ice but also embodied the values of respect and camaraderie that are central to the sport.
