Manchester City and Inter Milan Share Stalemate in Champions League Opener
Manchester City and Inter Milan kicked off their 2024 Champions League campaign with a tense, goalless draw that saw both sides showcase their strengths and vulnerabilities. Played at the Etihad Stadium, this was a rematch of the 2023 final, which City narrowly won. However, this time, neither team could break the deadlock, despite some thrilling moments and tactical discipline from both sides.
The match began with both teams trying to find their rhythm, but it was clear from the outset that Inter Milan came prepared to frustrate Pep Guardiola's City side. Manchester City dominated possession but found it challenging to break down Inter’s well-organized defense. The Italian team, known for its defensive solidity under Simone Inzaghi, absorbed City’s pressure while looking dangerous on the counterattack. Players like Hakan ÇalhanoÄŸlu and Lautaro Martinez were instrumental in driving Inter forward, though their chances were limited.

City’s Ilkay GündoÄŸan, who came off the bench in the second half, had the best opportunity of the game. Twice, he found himself in goal-scoring positions, including a close-range header in the dying minutes. However, Inter’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer was in fine form, making crucial saves to deny the hosts a late winner. Despite City’s relentless push, they struggled to create clear-cut chances, with Erling Haaland and Jack Grealish kept quiet by Inter’s defense, particularly Matteo Darmian and Francesco Acerbi.
On the other side, Inter had a few moments of their own where they could have stolen the game. A key chance fell to Henrikh Mkhitaryan, but the Armenian forward missed an excellent opportunity after a swift counterattack. Another moment of confusion saw Darmian, in a promising position, opt for a backheel instead of shooting, much to the frustration of the Inter bench.
Guardiola praised his team’s performance after the match, stating that it was still early in the season and that his players would improve. "We played so good... Inter are the masters of defending, but I love my team. We will get better," he said. Despite the lack of goals, he remained optimistic about the team’s prospects moving forward, especially in terms of finding their rhythm as the season progresses.
Inter’s coach Simone Inzaghi, while satisfied with the result, echoed a similar sentiment. He acknowledged the challenge of facing one of the best teams in the world but was pleased with his team's discipline and the result. Inter’s ability to disrupt City’s fluid play and keep them from scoring will boost their confidence going into the rest of the group stage.
Though the match ended in a stalemate, both teams will take positives from this encounter. City, while frustrated, maintained their defensive solidity, while Inter proved they could compete with Europe’s elite. As the Champions League group stage continues, both clubs will undoubtedly be aiming for more decisive results.
