McIlroy and Lowry Eye Weekend Glory at Irish Open

The 2024 Irish Open has reached its midpoint with Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry still very much in the mix for the title at Royal County Down. Despite facing challenging conditions, both stars have managed to stay competitive, setting the stage for an exciting weekend of golf.

Rory McIlroy, the world number three, carded a one-under-par 70 in his second round. His performance included a spectacular eagle on the par-five first hole, his tenth of the day. Although McIlroy struggled through the early part of his round with bogeys and missed opportunities, he showed his class with a stunning drive and putt that lifted the crowd. Despite his impressive play, he remains two strokes behind Matteo Manassero, who leads the tournament at six-under-par.

Shane Lowry, the 2019 Open champion, also remains in contention. After a second-round 69, he is four strokes off the lead. Lowry had a mixed day on Friday; he was on track for a score in the 60s until a bogey on his final hole dropped him back to one-under-par. Nevertheless, his resilience and positive attitude suggest that he could make a significant push over the weekend.

The leaderboard is tightly packed, with English golfers Laurie Canter and Todd Clements sitting in second place at five-under-par. Canter's round included five birdies, although he had an early bogey. Clements, who had a stellar first round with a 66, was steadier on Friday, with an even-par round. Spain’s Alejandro Del Rey, who led briefly, had a dramatic fall from grace after a quadruple bogey on the 15th hole, leaving him tied with McIlroy and Scotland's Ewen Ferguson at four-under-par.

Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin made sure of his place for the weekend with a closing birdie to finish at one-over-par. He is well-positioned to capitalize on any opportunities that arise over the next two days.

Among those missing the cut are Padraig Harrington and defending champion Vincent Norrman, who struggled to find their rhythm throughout the tournament. On the other hand, amateur Seán Keeling’s impressive fight-back with a one-under-par 34 on his final nine has secured his spot for the weekend, showing that even young talent can make a mark.

As the tournament progresses into the weekend, the spotlight will be on McIlroy and Lowry. Both have shown they have the ability to excel at Royal County Down, and if they can capitalize on their chances, we could be in for a thrilling finale. The next two rounds promise to be a test of skill and composure as the field jostles for position and aims for the coveted title. Fans can look forward to a weekend filled with high stakes and exceptional golf.
