Packers' Jordan Love Out for Week 2, Malik Willis to Start Against Colts
In a much-anticipated Week 2 matchup of the 2024 NFL season, the Green Bay Packers will be without their starting quarterback, Jordan Love, who has officially been ruled out due to a knee injury. Love, who sustained a sprained MCL during the Packers' Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, was downgraded to doubtful on Saturday, and now confirmed out just 90 minutes before kickoff against the Indianapolis Colts. The injury, which was initially expected to sideline him for three to six weeks, means Green Bay will turn to backup quarterback Malik Willis for the start.
The decision not to place Jordan Love on injured reserve, which would have guaranteed a four-game absence, raised hopes that he might recover sooner. However, as the week progressed, it became clear that Love’s knee hadn’t improved enough for him to suit up against the Colts. Head coach Matt LaFleur had hinted that Love was making progress throughout the week, but Saturday’s downgrade dashed any remaining hopes of a miraculous early return.

This opens the door for Malik Willis to lead the Packers at Lambeau Field, marking his first start in 631 days. Willis, who has shown potential as a dynamic playmaker, now has the chance to prove himself in front of Packers fans and on one of the biggest stages in football. He’ll also have wide receiver Jayden Reed available, as Reed was cleared to play despite calf and shin injuries that had him listed as questionable earlier in the week.
The Colts, on their side, are also facing injury issues. Wide receiver Josh Downs will miss the game due to an ankle injury, while standout defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, battling a back issue, has been cleared to play. Despite these setbacks, the Colts will aim to spoil Willis' debut as a starter for Green Bay.
All eyes will be on Malik Willis and how he handles the pressure of stepping into Jordan Love’s shoes. With Reed available to catch passes, the Packers still have weapons to challenge Indianapolis. However, fans and analysts alike will be watching to see how Green Bay’s offense operates without its usual starting quarterback.
As the Packers fight for their second win of the season, the performance of Malik Willis could be a crucial storyline, not just for this game, but for how Green Bay manages its quarterback situation until Jordan Love can return to the field.
