PSG Secures a Narrow 1-0 Victory Against Girona in Champions League Opener
In a tightly contested match on September 18, 2024, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) managed to edge out Girona with a 1-0 victory in their opening Champions League group stage clash. Despite a strong overall performance, the French side struggled to break down their Spanish opponents until a late mistake by Girona's goalkeeper, Paulo Gazzaniga, gifted them the win.
PSG's attack was largely subdued in the first half, with few clear chances created. The home side dominated possession, boasting nearly 64% of the ball, but couldn't convert that control into goals. Girona, though outmatched on paper, remained compact defensively, frustrating PSG's attempts to open the scoring. The visitors had just three shots on goal throughout the match, a testament to PSG's dominance in terms of ball control and chances created.

As the second half progressed, PSG increased the intensity. Star players like Achraf Hakimi, Nuno Mendes, and Kolo Muani pushed forward in search of the breakthrough. Several opportunities were squandered, with Hakimi’s powerful shot denied by Gazzaniga in the 85th minute. Kolo Muani also came close with a well-timed effort that narrowly missed the post.
The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time. Nuno Mendes sent in a dangerous cross from the left side, which Girona’s Alejandro Frances inadvertently deflected towards his own goal. Gazzaniga, attempting to collect the ball, misjudged it, allowing it to slip through his legs and into the net. It was a bitter blow for the visitors and a stroke of fortune for PSG.
This hard-fought win extends PSG's perfect start to the season under Luis Enrique, marking their fifth consecutive victory in all competitions. However, it was far from their best performance, with some players struggling to find their rhythm. Ousmane Dembélé, in particular, had a difficult night, missing a key chance late in the game and being substituted in injury time.
Despite the difficulties, PSG will be relieved to have started their Champions League campaign on a positive note. The result serves as a reminder that even the best teams can struggle at times, but the ability to grind out a win, especially in a competition as challenging as the Champions League, is often what separates the contenders from the pretenders.
