Sir Alan Bates’ Dream Wedding on Richard Branson’s Necker Island
In a charming twist of fate, Sir Alan Bates, renowned for his tireless campaign for justice, has celebrated a milestone moment in his life on one of the world’s most exclusive islands. At the age of 70, Bates, who has spent the past two decades fighting for those wrongfully accused by the Post Office Horizon scandal, has tied the knot with his partner of 34 years, Suzanne Sercombe, on Richard Branson’s private Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands.
The wedding, which took place last month, was a surprise for Lady Suzanne Bates, who found herself dressed in a casual sundress she had packed for their vacation. The ceremony was officiated by none other than Sir Richard Branson himself, who was reportedly inspired to extend the invitation after Bates had playfully mentioned in a January interview, “If Richard Branson is reading this, I’d love a holiday.”

Branson, the Virgin tycoon, expressed his joy at being part of the couple’s special day, stating, “It was an absolute joy to play a small part in Alan and Suzanne’s love story, and I know they will continue to spread the beautiful light they share with everyone around them.” Necker Island, known for hosting royalty, world leaders, and celebrities, provided a stunning backdrop for their vows, making the occasion even more memorable.
Bates’ journey to this joyful occasion has been anything but ordinary. A prominent figure in the battle for justice, Bates was thrust into the spotlight following a high-profile ITV drama that depicted his fight against the Post Office’s flawed Horizon IT system, which led to over 700 sub-postmasters being wrongfully convicted between 1999 and 2015. His relentless advocacy has not only garnered public attention but also earned him a knighthood in June and an honorary law doctorate from Bangor University.
The couple, who reside in Colwyn Bay, Wales, have endured significant challenges together, including the turmoil caused by the faulty IT system that unjustly targeted their post office business. Despite these hardships, their love has remained strong, culminating in a celebration that reflects both their personal triumphs and their enduring bond.
As the Post Office Inquiry is set to resume later this month, Bates' marriage stands as a symbol of personal victory amidst ongoing battles for justice. His story continues to inspire many, not just for his achievements in righting wrongs but also for the resilience and dedication he and Suzanne have shown throughout their journey together.
