Steve Bruce Returns to Football Management as Blackpool's New Head Coach
Steve Bruce is back in the spotlight of football management after being appointed as the new head coach of Blackpool. The League One club announced this significant change in leadership on September 3, 2024. Bruce, who has been without a managerial role since his dismissal from West Bromwich Albion in October 2022, will now lead Blackpool on a two-year contract.
The 63-year-old Bruce brings a wealth of experience to Bloomfield Road, having managed over 1,000 competitive matches across a varied career. His managerial resume includes notable stints at clubs such as Birmingham City, Hull City, Aston Villa, and Newcastle United. His return marks his 13th role in football management since retiring as a player in 1999.

Bruce's appointment comes after Blackpool's recent decision to part ways with Neil Critchley. Critchley, who was dismissed following a string of poor results at the start of the season, had only been with the club for a brief period. Blackpool had high hopes for the current season after narrowly missing out on a play-off spot last year, finishing in eighth position. However, their campaign has started poorly, with the team securing only two points from their opening four matches.
Steve Bruce is set to bring his extensive experience to the role, alongside his trusted long-term assistant, Steve Agnew. The coaching team will also include Richard Keogh, Stephen Dobbie, and Steve Banks. Bruce expressed his enthusiasm about the new challenge, stating, “I’m delighted to be back in football and to take charge of this fantastic football club. I look forward to meeting all of the staff and players in the coming days as we prepare for what we all hope will be an exciting season at Bloomfield Road.”
Blackpool's owner, Simon Sadler, highlighted Bruce’s track record as a key factor in his appointment. Sadler praised Bruce’s “organised approach” and his ability to “build a hardworking and entertaining side.” He also emphasized the value of Bruce’s experience in nurturing both players and coaching talent, which was a significant part of the club's decision-making process.
Bruce will have to wait until September 14 to lead Blackpool for the first time, with their upcoming fixture against Exeter City at home marking his official debut. The anticipation surrounding his arrival has already started to build, as fans and staff alike are eager to see the positive impact Bruce can have on the team’s fortunes this season.
