The True Horror Behind Netflix’s ‘The Deliverance’: The Latoya Ammons Case
Netflix's latest horror film, The Deliverance , has gripped audiences with its chilling narrative, but the story behind the film is even more disturbing. Premiering on August 30, 2024, and helmed by Academy Award nominee Lee Daniels, the film draws inspiration from the real-life events surrounding Latoya Ammons and her family. If you're intrigued by supernatural horror, this movie should definitely be on your watchlist.
The Deliverance delves into the terrifying experiences of Latoya Ammons, who, in 2011, moved into a rental house in Gary, Indiana, only to face a series of horrifying supernatural events. The story, which Daniels adapted for the screen, features a star-studded cast including Andra Day, Mo’Nique, and Glenn Close. Despite its cinematic flair, the film’s roots lie in a very real and unsettling series of events.

Latoya Ammons, along with her mother Rosa Campbell and her three children, began experiencing strange occurrences shortly after moving into their new home. They reported hearing footsteps, seeing shadowy figures, and even witnessing physical manifestations such as wet boot prints appearing mysteriously in their living space. Things escalated quickly, with Ammons claiming her children were levitating and being physically thrown around the house by unseen forces. The severity of the situation led Ammons to seek help from local churches and clairvoyants, but their advice seemed only to worsen the situation.
The family’s ordeal took a disturbing turn when they visited their family physician, Dr. Geoffrey Onyeukwu, in April 2012. Dr. Onyeukwu’s notes described the situation as bizarre and frightening, noting instances of the children displaying unusual and frightening behavior, including cursing in demonic voices and being physically harmed in ways that defied explanation. This led to a chaotic scene involving emergency responders and the police, who struggled to make sense of the events unfolding before them.
The case drew the attention of the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS), who initially investigated the family for potential child abuse. However, despite finding the children healthy and Ammons deemed to be of sound mind, the bizarre and supernatural claims continued to perplex everyone involved. DCS eventually took emergency custody of the children but returned them to Ammons in November 2012 after she moved to a new home and complied with their requirements.
One of the most unsettling aspects of the case was the involvement of Rev. Michael Maginot, who performed exorcisms on Ammons’ son after the family sought religious intervention. The supernatural claims continued even after these exorcisms, with reports of unexplained phenomena and ghostly sightings in their former home. The property was eventually sold for a fraction of its value, and the current occupants have reportedly had to deal with unwanted attention from curious outsiders.
Today, Latoya Ammons and her children seem to have moved past the traumatic events. Ammons has not been in the public eye much since regaining custody of her children, and the family reportedly continues to attend church regularly, though they have moved away from solely relying on religious explanations for their experiences.
Director Lee Daniels has admitted to a profound impact from the Ammons story. Although he initially hesitated to take on the project due to its dark themes, he felt compelled to bring the story to a wider audience. Daniels made significant creative changes in the film to create a more personal and interpretative narrative, though he stayed true to the core elements of Ammons' harrowing experiences.
The Deliverance thus stands as both a cinematic exploration and a reflection of real-life terror, capturing the unsettling essence of the Ammons family's ordeal while also serving as a testament to the enduring fascination with the supernatural.
