Tragic Death of 8-Year-Old Mia Glynn Highlighted by Missteps in Sepsis Diagnosis
An eight-year-old girl, Mia Glynn, tragically passed away from sepsis after being sent home twice by a GP who cited a full hospital as the reason for not admitting her. Mia's heartbreaking story has drawn attention to the critical need for early sepsis diagnosis and proper medical response.
Mia Glynn’s ordeal began on December 5, 2022, when her parents, Soron and Katie Glynn, first took her to their local GP after she started vomiting, suffered a severe headache, and complained of a sore throat. Despite her alarming symptoms, including high fever and signs of distress, the family was advised that her condition was likely viral and were instructed to manage her symptoms with fluids and paracetamol.
Just three days later, Mia’s health deteriorated further. She had not eaten properly, was experiencing a raised heart rate, and had reduced urine output. Concerned, her parents returned to the GP surgery. By this point, Mia's symptoms had worsened, including a persistent high temperature and severe headache. Despite the visible decline in her condition, the GP again sent her home, this time suggesting ibuprofen and advising them to wait until she went to bed to start antibiotics. They were told that the hospital was at full capacity and that they would face a long wait if they went there.

That night, Mia’s condition deteriorated alarmingly. She woke up in the early hours of December 9, disoriented, with blue lips, rashes on her arms and legs, and an unusual coldness despite her complaints of feeling hot. Fearing the worst, her parents called an ambulance, and Mia was rushed to the hospital.
Upon arrival, she was given intravenous fluids and antibiotics. Unfortunately, Mia went into suspected septic shock and suffered a cardiac arrest shortly after. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, she passed away about 20 minutes after reaching the hospital. The cause of her death was confirmed as sepsis due to a Group A Streptococcus infection.
The Glynn family’s grief is immeasurable. Katie, Mia’s mother, described her daughter as "the happiest, brightest, most loving and caring girl" whose loss has left an enormous void. The family has since sought to honor Mia’s memory by raising over £40,000 through fundraising events, donating more than £16,000 to the UK Sepsis Trust, and establishing the charity aiM, an anagram of Mia’s name.
Soron Glynn, Mia’s father, expressed the profound sadness of witnessing their daughter's final moments and emphasized the urgent need for public education on sepsis. He and Katie hope that by sharing their story, they can increase awareness of the signs of sepsis and advocate for better training and resources for healthcare professionals.
Victoria Zinzan, the specialist medical negligence lawyer representing the Glynn family, noted that Mia’s tragic death underscores the critical importance of early diagnosis and treatment for sepsis. She stressed that recognizing the signs of this dangerous condition is vital for saving lives and preventing such devastating outcomes.
The heartbreaking case of Mia Glynn serves as a somber reminder of the fragile nature of life and the essential need for timely and accurate medical care.
