UNLV Dominates Fresno State in First Game Without Matthew Sluka as Hajj-Malik Williams Shines
UNLV football took center stage this weekend with a huge statement win, even amidst turmoil. Without their previous starting quarterback, Matthew Sluka, who quit the program earlier in the week, all eyes were on Hajj-Malik Williams, and he delivered. The game against Fresno State was one for the books, as Williams not only stepped up but completely dominated, leading the Rebels to a stunning 59-14 blowout victory.
Williams, a transfer from Campbell University, was relatively unknown heading into the game. But after Saturday, everyone knows his name. In his first-ever FBS start, Williams completed 13 of 16 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns. He also led the team in rushing with 119 yards and another touchdown on the ground. This performance was nothing short of spectacular and has sparked new hope for UNLV's season.

Sluka’s sudden exit left a cloud of uncertainty hanging over the team. Sluka, who had previously helped the Rebels secure a 3-0 start and their first appearance in the top-25 rankings, left after citing unmet Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) promises. He claimed the university failed to deliver $100,000 in NIL commitments, a claim the university strongly denied. In the wake of Sluka’s departure, it was unclear how the team would recover.
Enter Williams, whose leadership and poise were evident from the first snap. UNLV coach Barry Odom had been confident in Williams' abilities, having stated earlier in the season that the team had multiple quarterbacks capable of leading them to success. Odom’s faith was rewarded, as Williams not only filled the gap but exceeded expectations, reigniting the team’s playoff hopes.
The game was more than just a win; it was a comprehensive team effort. UNLV’s defense was equally dominant, recording four interceptions and holding Fresno State to just four rushing yards through three quarters. Special teams also contributed with a blocked punt returned for a touchdown and the first kickoff return for a score in 13 years. The Rebels' performance on both sides of the ball ensured that their quarterback situation was a non-issue, at least for now.
Looking ahead, UNLV faces a tough schedule with games against Syracuse, Utah State, and Boise State. But if Williams continues to perform at this level, the Rebels may have what it takes to not only survive but thrive, potentially securing an unlikely bid to the College Football Playoff.
In a final, lighthearted moment after the game, UNLV receiver Ricky White III jokingly suggested that a $100,000 donation, intended for Sluka, should now go to the offensive line after such a dominant performance. The team’s spirits seem high, and if they can keep this momentum going, they could be in for a historic season.
