Why Robert Pattinson’s Batman Won’t Appear in HBO’s "The Penguin"
If you were eagerly anticipating a cameo by Robert Pattinson’s Batman in HBO’s new series "The Penguin," you might need to recalibrate your expectations. The show, which is set to premiere on September 19, 2024, picks up where 2022’s "The Batman" left off, but fans of Pattinson’s Dark Knight should brace themselves for a surprise: Batman will not make an appearance in this series.
In a recent interview with SFX Magazine, Lauren LeFranc, the showrunner of "The Penguin," along with executive producer and film director Matt Reeves, explained why they opted not to include Pattinson’s Batman in the series. According to LeFranc, the perspective of "The Penguin" differs significantly from that of Matt Reeves’ films. "Matt’s films are through the lens of Batman," LeFranc said. "You’re high up, looking down on the city. It’s a different perspective. With Oz, you’re in the city streets, you’re in the grit and the muck and the grime. He’s looking up, wanting to claw his way to the top."

This shift in focus allows "The Penguin" to delve deeper into the seedy underbelly of Gotham City, offering a fresh viewpoint that doesn’t necessarily require Batman’s presence. LeFranc emphasizes that Gotham is rich enough to support its own stories and characters. "I think Gotham is an interesting enough city that it deserves to have more doors unlocked within it," she added. "For us to walk through those and see what we think."
Matt Reeves, who directed "The Batman" and is also involved in "The Penguin," concurs with this approach. He believes that the absence of Batman does not detract from the series. "I don’t feel like it’s missing something fundamental," Reeves stated. "I feel like it’s an extension of what is fundamentally there. We know this is the world of Batman. You’re going down a different alley. So the spectre of Batman is there. The spectre of the Riddler is there. The spectre of everything that happens in the last movie is there. It informs it. And it’s exactly where we begin."
Oscar-nominee Colin Farrell will reprise his role as Oz Cobb, the titular Penguin, a character who captivated audiences in "The Batman." Alongside him, the series will feature Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, and several other notable actors, including Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, and Shohreh Aghdashloo, among others. Craig Zobel, known for "The Mare of Easttown," will direct the first two episodes and serve as an executive producer.
In summary, while fans hoping to see Pattinson’s Batman might be disappointed, "The Penguin" promises to explore Gotham from a new and gritty angle, focusing on the city’s underworld and its characters. The show’s debut on September 19 is set to offer a fresh perspective on the familiar dark and troubled streets of Gotham.
