WKYC Meteorologist Hollie Strano Fired After DUI Arrest
In a significant development within the Cleveland media landscape, WKYC Channel 3 has parted ways with meteorologist Hollie Strano. Strano, a familiar face on the local news scene for over two decades, announced her departure in a heartfelt Facebook post on Monday morning. Hollie Strano, who had served as a trusted meteorologist and a host on WKYC's "GO" morning show, revealed that her employment was terminated by WKYC and its parent company, Tegna, after 22 years of service. The dismissal comes after Strano's public acknowledgment of her journey through recovery following an arrest for driving under the influence (DUI) last Thanksgiving.

Strano’s legal troubles began on November 23, 2023, when she was involved in a severe car accident in Cuyahoga Falls. She was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence after crashing her SUV into a utility pole while being pursued by the police. Strano’s blood alcohol level was recorded at 0.244%, which is more than three times the legal limit. The incident resulted in her guilty plea to a first-degree misdemeanor.
Following the arrest, Strano faced legal repercussions including a $375 fine, a one-year license suspension, and a mandatory six-day driver intervention program. Despite these challenges, Strano has been open about her struggle with addiction, sharing her recovery journey with the public in an effort to raise awareness and reduce stigma.
In her emotional post, Strano expressed deep sadness over her termination. She criticized WKYC and Tegna for their actions, suggesting that their decision reflects a broader societal stigma surrounding addiction. Strano stated, "I believe the actions of WKYC and Tegna demonstrate the stigma surrounding addiction that so many in our community experience every day. I have been honest and authentic about my journey, and I will continue to do so… For me, but also for you and everyone who is struggling in silence for fear of this type of conduct by your own employers."
Strano’s supporters have rallied around her, with many expressing their disappointment over the station's decision and offering words of encouragement. The meteorologist has vowed to continue focusing on her sobriety and health, a commitment she reinforced by celebrating a milestone of nine months of sobriety just two weeks ago.
