Anne Hathaway Confirms the Long-Awaited "Princess Diaries 3" Is Finally Happening!
Fans of The Princess Diaries can finally celebrate as Anne Hathaway has officially confirmed that the much-anticipated third installment of the beloved franchise is in development. It's been over two decades since The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement hit theaters in 2004, and fans have been eagerly waiting to return to Genovia ever since. On October 4th, 2024, Hathaway made the exciting announcement in a playful TikTok video, teasing the upcoming film by holding up three fingers and saying, "Shut up!"—an iconic line from the original movie.
The Academy Award-winning actress also shared a heartfelt caption: “Miracles happen ✨👑 Back to Genovia with @Disney Studios & @Somewhere Pictures. The fairy tale continues.” This social media post has left fans buzzing with excitement, marking the official confirmation that The Princess Diaries 3 is in the works.

Adele Lim, the talented director behind Joy Ride and writer of Crazy Rich Asians , is set to direct the film. Although many plot details remain under wraps, the announcement confirms that the franchise will continue to follow the story of Mia Thermopolis, Hathaway’s character, who transformed from a shy San Francisco teenager into the Princess—and later Queen—of Genovia.
Julie Andrews, who played Mia's grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, has yet to confirm if she will return for the third installment. While Andrews has expressed both excitement and uncertainty in past interviews, the hope remains strong among fans that she will reprise her regal role. In the meantime, Hathaway is the only confirmed returning cast member.
The Princess Diaries franchise first captured hearts in 2001 with its relatable coming-of-age storyline, lighthearted humor, and heartfelt themes of family and self-discovery. Directed by the late Garry Marshall, the original film became an unexpected box office hit, grossing over $165 million worldwide. Its 2004 sequel brought back Hathaway and Andrews and continued Mia's journey as she navigated life as a royal.
For longtime fans, the confirmation of a third movie is nothing short of a miracle, as Hathaway herself teased. After years of speculation, rumors, and even an earlier draft of a script that Hathaway discussed in 2019, the return to Genovia is finally official. Now, the world waits eagerly to see where Mia's royal adventures will take her next.
As Hathaway herself noted in the past, the development process for the film has been gradual, but fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief. The fairy tale continues, and The Princess Diaries 3 is on its way!
