Auger-Aliassime Starts Strong in Swiss Indoors Title Defense with Win Over Baez

Felix Auger-Aliassime has kicked off his Swiss Indoors title defense in Basel with an impressive win over Argentina's Sebastian Baez. The 24-year-old Canadian, who is a two-time defending champion at the tournament, secured a straight-sets victory, 7-5, 6-1, to advance to the second round. This marks another step in Auger-Aliassime’s consistent performance at the tournament, where he looks poised to defend his title.

The first set was tightly contested, with both players pushing each other to the limit. Baez, ranked 26th in the world, fought hard, but Auger-Aliassime managed to break his serve in the 12th game, capitalizing on a return error from Baez to take the set 7-5. From there, the Canadian dominated the second set, breaking Baez twice, first to lead 2-0 and again at 5-1. He sealed the win with his eighth ace of the match, demonstrating his dominance on the court.

Their previous encounter took place in September during the Davis Cup, where Auger-Aliassime also won in straight sets, helping Canada secure a group stage victory over Argentina. Ranked 19th in the world and seeded eighth in Basel, the Canadian will now face France's Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, who is ranked 50th globally, in the second round.

Auger-Aliassime’s history at the Swiss Indoors has been impressive. Last year, he entered the tournament as a wild card and went on to win the title, defeating Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in the final. In 2022, he also claimed victory over Denmark’s Holger Rune, adding to his growing list of accomplishments. As he continues his 2024 campaign, Auger-Aliassime is undoubtedly a player to watch.

This successful start in Basel is a promising sign for Auger-Aliassime, who has had a solid year so far. His sharp form, particularly on the indoor courts of Switzerland, suggests he is well on his way to making another deep run in this prestigious tournament.
