Bayern's Draw Against Eintracht: Eberl's Frustration as Defensive Issues Persist
Bayern Munich's recent 3-3 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt has left many frustrated, especially the club’s sporting director, Max Eberl. Despite dominating large parts of the game, Bayern failed to secure the win, continuing their streak of three matches without victory. Eberl voiced his disappointment, emphasizing that although the team played with intensity and control, the result was unacceptable. Bayern’s attack was relentless, but their defensive lapses cost them, just as they did in previous games against Aston Villa and Leverkusen.
Bayern opened the scoring through Kim Min-Jae in the 15th minute, and it seemed they were on course for a commanding performance. However, Eintracht Frankfurt quickly responded with goals from Omar Marmoush and Hugo Ekitiké, exposing Bayern’s vulnerability at the back. Dayot Upamecano managed to equalize before halftime, but the Bavarians’ defensive struggles continued throughout the match. Frankfurt, despite being under pressure for most of the game, capitalized on Bayern’s high defensive line and punished them during key moments.

In his post-match interview, Eberl didn’t hold back. He acknowledged that the team’s performance in terms of possession and pressing was excellent, but expressed frustration that their efforts weren’t reflected in the final score. "The only thing that really annoys us is the result," Eberl said. "We dominated the game, ran more than Frankfurt, but we didn’t get the win. We need to defend better, especially in 50/50 situations. We should have closed down those spaces much sooner."
Frankfurt’s late equalizer in the 94th minute by Marmoush, after another defensive lapse, left Bayern players and fans alike stunned. For Eberl, this was particularly difficult to digest as the team had controlled most of the game but failed to convert their dominance into a victory. Eberl specifically pointed out that such gaps in their defense—where large spaces behind the backline are left exposed—make it incredibly difficult for defenders to keep up, especially when facing in-form attackers like Marmoush.
This match highlighted a pattern seen in recent Bayern games, where offensive brilliance hasn’t been enough to secure the three points. Bayern’s inability to finish off games, despite overwhelming possession and chances, continues to be a concern. Their defensive structure is under intense scrutiny, with Eberl admitting that it is an area they need to improve quickly if they are to maintain their lead in the Bundesliga.
Looking ahead, Bayern Munich will need to tighten up their defense if they hope to avoid more frustrating results like this one. While Eberl is rightfully pleased with the team’s pressing and offensive play, the gaps at the back remain a serious issue that could derail their season if not addressed swiftly.
