Bossley Park Iconic Deli Closes After 70 Years, Leaving Community Heartbroken
The Bossley Park General Store and Deli, a beloved institution in southwest Sydney, has closed its doors after seven decades of serving the local community. Since its inception in 1953, this deli had been more than just a shop—it was a meeting place, a cultural hub, and a bridge connecting generations of local residents through authentic European fare, particularly Italian delicacies.
The closure has left a significant void, with customers and community members expressing deep sadness. For many, this store was much more than just a place to grab a sandwich. It had become a cherished cornerstone in the local area, comparable in its emotional significance to cultural landmarks like the Opera House. Owned and operated for the past 15 years by Enzo and Franca di Federico, the deli was known for its welcoming atmosphere and its role in bringing the community together. Franca even described it as a “home on a plate,” a place where customers would come to feel part of something special.

It’s really touching to see how much this place has meant to them,” Franca shared in an interview. Operations manager Paula Borges described the deli as irreplaceable, saying that it can’t be replicated, which is what makes the loss so heartbreaking.
One of the deli’s specialties, the panini, even went viral on social media, dubbed “the dopest Italian sandwich ever” on TikTok. Despite this viral success and a strong customer base, the deli’s closure was inevitable, as the landlord had other plans for the property. For Enzo and Franca, the decision to close up shop was bittersweet, marking the end of an era that brought them not only business success but emotional fulfillment.
Their social media statement announcing the closure was heartfelt, thanking customers for being a part of their journey and expressing deep gratitude for the community’s support over the years. The store’s last day of operation was on October 6, 2024, and although the di Federicos are now ready to retire, the community will feel the absence of this treasured deli for a long time to come.
