Daniel Khalife Congratulated Officer Who Arrested Him After Prison Escape, Court Told

In an intriguing turn of events, former British soldier Daniel Khalife reportedly "congratulated" the officer who arrested him, following a dramatic three-day manhunt after his escape from HMP Wandsworth in September 2023. Khalife, 23, was apprehended while cycling along a canal towpath in West London, where a plainclothes detective sergeant spotted him and quickly moved to make the arrest. According to the officer's testimony at Woolwich Crown Court, he was able to identify Khalife based on descriptions of his appearance. The detective recalled leaping from his car and running down an alley to intercept him.

The arrest occurred at a fast pace, with the officer initially drawing his Taser as Khalife approached on his bike. However, the 23-year-old soldier, who allegedly flinched at the sight of the weapon, was moving too quickly to stop. The officer managed to grab Khalife’s arm and pull him off the bike onto the ground. Remarkably, Khalife did not resist arrest, instead displaying a friendly and almost jovial demeanor. According to the officer, Khalife not only complied but even went so far as to congratulate him for catching him.

Khalife's escape from Wandsworth prison had gained widespread attention after it was discovered that he allegedly strapped himself to the underside of a food delivery truck. This bold move led to a nationwide search until he was finally captured. Khalife, who joined the British Army at 17, faces a series of serious charges, including collecting sensitive military information for Iran, contrary to the Official Secrets Act. Additionally, he is accused of perpetrating a bomb hoax, although he denies all charges against him.

During his trial, jurors were presented with various pieces of evidence, including items found in Khalife’s possession at the time of his arrest, such as a phone, receipts, and approximately £200 in cash. Khalife’s time on the run included visits to shops like Mountain Warehouse, as well as sightings at supermarkets and even a McDonald’s.

The trial continues, as Khalife contests the charges, maintaining his innocence. However, his brief exchange with the arresting officer, in which he jovially congratulated him, adds an interesting layer to the unfolding court drama surrounding his escape.
