David Jason Reflects on Del Boy Legacy: “It Upsets Me, People Only Remember That Role”

David Jason, the iconic British actor known for his unforgettable portrayal of Derek "Del Boy" Trotter in Only Fools and Horses , recently made a rare admission about his feelings regarding the character’s lasting impact. Despite his immense success across a variety of roles over his long career, the 84-year-old star shared that the public’s overwhelming association of him with Del Boy leaves him feeling somewhat disheartened.

Speaking candidly in an interview, Jason revealed that Del Boy remains “with me all the time,” describing the character as a "ghost" that follows him everywhere, much like a scene out of A Christmas Carol . Wherever he goes, fans still shout classic lines like "lovely jubbly!" and recognize him only for that iconic role. While Jason is proud of the joy that Del Boy brought to audiences, he admits it can be frustrating that his work in other projects, such as Open All Hours , A Touch of Frost , and Danger Mouse , often gets overshadowed.

He also shared a personal regret: that he never fulfilled his dream of performing on the National Theatre stage. Despite his achievements in television and film, Jason revealed that the romantic vision of acting alongside greats in prestigious theatrical productions was something he aspired to but never realized. That unfulfilled dream, coupled with the constant reminder of Del Boy, leaves him with mixed feelings about his career.

However, Jason accepts that this is part of being in the public eye, stating, “It’s part of giving your time and your life to the Great British public, God bless them.” Even though Only Fools and Horses ended its run in 2003, the love for the show remains so strong that fans frequently speculate about a potential reboot. But for Jason, the idea of revisiting Del Boy without the show’s creator, John Sullivan, who passed away in 2011, doesn’t feel right. He believes that Sullivan’s unique genius in crafting humor is irreplaceable, making a revival impossible in his eyes.

Ultimately, while Jason’s connection to Del Boy is undeniable, his career encompasses far more than that one role, even if it's what most people remember.
