Daylight Saving Time 2024: When to 'Fall Back' and Gain an Extra Hour of Sleep
As we approach November, many of us are preparing for the end of Daylight Saving Time (DST) in 2024. This annual time shift will occur on Sunday, November 3rd, at 2 a.m. local time, when we "fall back" and turn our clocks back by one hour. This tradition allows for an extra hour of sleep, but it also means shorter days and earlier sunsets as winter approaches. While this shift may be a welcome break for some, it also signals the beginning of the darker, colder months ahead.
Daylight Saving Time has been a long-standing, yet sometimes controversial, practice in the United States. Most states follow it, with clocks springing forward in March and falling back in November. The rationale behind it is to extend evening daylight during warmer months, but when November hits, we shift back to Standard Time, giving us more daylight in the morning instead. However, the change can cause disruptions for people adjusting their schedules and routines, especially parents, children, and even pets.

The idea of DST dates back to World War I when it was introduced to conserve energy by maximizing daylight hours. Though originally intended as a temporary measure, it has persisted in various forms over the decades. In fact, efforts have been made recently to eliminate the biannual clock change entirely. In 2022, the U.S. Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make DST permanent. However, it failed to gain approval from the House of Representatives and remains stalled in Congress.
Not all states participate in DST. Arizona (excluding the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii, along with several U.S. territories like Puerto Rico and Guam, do not adjust their clocks. These regions opted out, finding little benefit in altering their schedules, particularly due to their unique climates and daylight patterns.
For now, the twice-yearly tradition continues. After we turn our clocks back in November, we will spring forward again on Sunday, March 9, 2025. Until then, enjoy the extra hour of sleep!
