Dodgers Near World Series Sweep After 4-2 Victory Over Yankees in Game 3
The Los Angeles Dodgers are now just one win away from sweeping the New York Yankees and claiming the 2024 World Series title. In Game 3, the Dodgers showed their dominance with a 4-2 victory, thanks largely to a standout performance from Walker Buehler on the mound and Freddie Freeman’s early two-run homer. Freeman’s home run, his third in this series, quickly set the tone, pushing the Dodgers ahead in what has become a one-sided series.
Buehler, who came off a challenging regular season, was in top form, pitching five scoreless innings and allowing the Yankees minimal chances to close the gap. Notably, his pitch count was kept low at just 76, indicating he could have gone longer if necessary. The Dodgers bullpen backed him up well, with a nearly flawless effort until Alex Verdugo’s two-run homer in the ninth inning cut into the Dodgers’ lead.

The Yankees, meanwhile, continued to struggle. The high expectations placed on their key players, especially Aaron Judge, haven’t materialized. Judge has been unable to find his stride in this series, going 1-for-12 with seven strikeouts. It’s been a tough postseason for Judge, with his performance reflecting the broader struggles of the Yankees’ lineup, which hasn’t been able to break through against a Dodgers pitching staff that has outperformed expectations.
Dodgers left fielder Teoscar Hernández added to the excitement when he threw out Giancarlo Stanton at home in a close play in the fourth inning, snuffing out one of the Yankees’ few scoring threats. It was a perfectly executed throw and underscored the Dodgers’ sharp fielding and attention to detail throughout this series. Meanwhile, Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt had a rough outing, lasting only 2 2/3 innings before being pulled after giving up two runs in the first and struggling with control in the third.
With the Dodgers holding a 3-0 lead in the series, history is on their side. In the 41 prior instances of teams going up 3-0 in a best-of-seven series, only one team – the 2004 Red Sox – managed to come back. The Dodgers are now poised to clinch the championship in Game 4, where they plan to utilize a bullpen game, while the Yankees turn to rookie starter Luis Gil in a desperate attempt to keep their title hopes alive.
This series, which was initially hyped as a clash between two baseball powerhouses, has instead highlighted the Dodgers’ consistent dominance and adaptability. With the pressure on New York and history against them, Game 4 could seal the series and give Los Angeles its eighth championship.
