Dog Spotted on Top of Giza's Ancient Pyramid Captivates the Internet

In an unexpected turn of events, a dog has recently captured the attention of social media users worldwide by appearing atop one of Egypt’s iconic pyramids. This sighting occurred earlier this week when U.S. paraglider Marshall Mosher, along with his fellow paragliders, soared over the Great Pyramids of Giza at sunrise. What they saw was not just the majestic beauty of these ancient structures but also a stray dog seemingly enjoying a view from the summit of the Khafre Pyramid, which stands at an impressive 448 feet (136 meters) tall.

As Mosher recounted, the group initially mistook the furry figure for something more exotic, speculating it might be a mountain lion. "We noticed something running back and forth on top of the pyramid," Mosher told CNN Travel. With a mix of curiosity and concern, they zoomed in to get a better look, only to confirm that it was indeed a dog, appearing to chase after some birds at the peak.

Mosher's initial worries about the dog’s safety soon eased when he realized that if it managed to climb up there, it could likely find its way back down. He humorously quipped about the possibility of the dog finding a "secret portal" to teleport to the pyramid’s summit. The following day, they returned to see if the adventurous canine was still present but were met with disappointment. However, another paragliding enthusiast recorded a video showing what appeared to be the same dog safely descending from the pyramid.

The incident quickly went viral, with Mosher's post garnering millions of views on social media. This unexpected fame left Mosher surprised, as he had anticipated that the story of flying over the pyramids would attract attention, but not to this extent. Commentators online even drew humorous parallels between the dog and Anubis, the ancient Egyptian god often depicted with a jackal’s head, further fueling the narrative around this captivating sighting.

While the pyramid area is home to many stray dogs, Mosher has expressed a commitment to helping these animals. He is actively looking for animal shelters in Cairo to assist these strays in finding safer environments away from the adventurous heights of the pyramids. Reflecting on the dog’s choice to venture to the top, he noted, “I can see why the dog wanted to go up there. It’s definitely the best view for a Cairo street dog that I can think of.”

This delightful encounter between ancient history and modern-day life serves as a reminder of the unexpected joys that can be found in the most unlikely places, all while shining a light on the plight of stray animals in iconic locations like Giza.
