Dusty Baker Reflects on Houston Astros' Decline Amid Their Struggles
Dusty Baker, the former manager of the Houston Astros, has been making headlines after the team's early exit from the 2024 postseason. Houston, who fell short in the AL Wild Card round against the Detroit Tigers, has seen back-to-back disappointing seasons, marking a possible end to their dominant era. Last year, they were ousted by the Texas Rangers in a nail-biting ALCS that went all seven games. This time around, the team’s inability to advance has raised questions about whether Houston's reign at the top of Major League Baseball is finally over.
Baker, who led the Astros to a World Series title in 2022, wasn't quiet about his feelings towards his former team after their elimination. The veteran manager, who took over during the fallout of the Astros' sign-stealing scandal, played a key role in stabilizing the organization when its legitimacy was at risk. Despite his accomplishments, he faced significant blame for the Astros’ inability to reclaim the title in 2023. That blame, compounded by internal disagreements with the front office, led to Baker's departure at the end of the season.

Baker’s comments have revealed some of the frustrations he faced while managing the Astros. Notably, he wasn’t able to fully shape his coaching staff, something he felt hindered his ability to implement his vision. The staff he inherited largely came from A.J. Hinch’s regime, which was involved in the notorious cheating scandal that marred the Astros’ success. For Baker, not having the autonomy to choose his team was a lingering issue, despite the achievements they shared. It’s clear Baker still harbors a bit of a grudge, and perhaps with good reason.
The Astros themselves face an uncertain future. Alex Bregman, a cornerstone of their recent success, is heading into free agency. While the team’s GM, Dana Brown, has not given up on re-signing the All-Star third baseman, the odds don’t seem to favor Houston retaining him. Even Jose Altuve, the heart of the Astros’ infield, acknowledged how crucial Bregman is to their chances of future success. With key players potentially leaving, Baker might have been the first to go, but it looks like Houston’s core is slowly unraveling.
As Baker moves on with a new role in the San Francisco Giants organization, it’s fascinating to see how the Astros, once seemingly unbeatable, are now facing a potential rebuild. Whether or not they can retain their stars and regain their dominant form remains to be seen. But for Dusty Baker, watching from the sidelines as his former team struggles to maintain its footing must feel like pure cinema.
