Election Results 2024: Congress-NC Lead in J&K, Close Contest in Haryana
The Election Commission of India is overseeing the counting of votes for the 2024 Assembly elections in two key regions: Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir (J&K). With 90 assembly seats at stake in each state, the battle has been intense. Polling in Haryana was held on October 5, while J&K conducted its elections in three phases, marking its first state elections after becoming a Union Territory post-Article 370 abrogation.
As the results trickle in, it's clear that the Congress-National Conference (NC) alliance is gaining momentum in Jammu and Kashmir. Early trends show the alliance crossing the halfway mark with a lead on 50 seats, giving them a significant edge over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is ahead on 27 seats. The elections in J&K are significant not just for being the first post-statehood vote but also for the central issue of restoring full statehood, which has been a key talking point for both the BJP and the opposition.

In Haryana, the race is much tighter. Early trends showed Congress surging ahead with leads on 53 seats, but the BJP is not far behind, leading on 43 seats as counting continues. The fight here is critical, as the BJP is aiming for a third consecutive term. Various exit polls had predicted a Congress victory, but the results remain closely contested, adding to the suspense.
This election in J&K saw the participation of several important regional parties, such as the People's Democratic Party (PDP), the People's Conference, and the Apni Party. These parties could play a pivotal role if no single party manages to secure an outright majority. In Haryana, prominent leaders like former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda (Congress) and current Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini (BJP) are crucial to their respective parties' chances.
The ongoing counting reveals a dynamic political landscape, with both regions having much at stake. As results become clearer, the focus will be on how these numbers shape future alliances and governance in these politically sensitive states.
