Grammy-Winning Rapper Lil Durk Arrested in Alleged Murder-for-Hire Plot

Rapper Lil Durk, whose legal name is Durk Devontay Banks, was recently arrested in South Florida under serious accusations connected to a murder-for-hire plot, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. Held by the U.S. Marshals, Banks faces charges of orchestrating violence against a rival, with the allegations extending to his Chicago-based rap collective, Only the Family (OTF). Federal prosecutors in the Central District of California have accused Banks of ordering attacks, including an alleged hit on an individual identified as T.B., stemming from longstanding tensions.

Court documents indicate that Banks placed a bounty on T.B.’s life after a conflict that followed the 2020 murder of Banks’s close friend, fellow rapper Dayvon Bennett, known as King Von. King Von was reportedly shot by an associate of T.B. in Atlanta, igniting a feud that allegedly led Banks to retaliate. Prosecutors claim that Banks directed OTF members to locate T.B. and launch a deadly assault in August 2022 at a Los Angeles gas station. Tragically, the shooting resulted in the death of S.R., a family member of T.B., and authorities say at least 18 rounds were fired at the scene, creating an extremely dangerous situation for bystanders.

U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada emphasized the violence and disregard for public safety involved in the incident, describing the attack as “cold-blooded.” Banks, now 32, faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, with a potential maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted. Five others from the OTF group were also detained on related charges, and authorities executed search warrants across multiple locations tied to the organization. The Department of Justice detailed that these individuals used OTF funds for the planning and execution of the hit, including flights and other logistics organized by Banks.

Banks appeared in Miami court following his arrest, and his lawyer requested privacy, with no immediate statement on the case. This development comes only months after Lil Durk received a Grammy for his collaboration with J. Cole on “All My Life,” and he was set to release a new album next month, which now faces an uncertain future. Known for his influential role in drill rap, a hip-hop subgenre marked by its raw and often violent lyrics, Lil Durk’s music is deeply tied to the Chicago street culture that his work both critiques and embodies.

As the case progresses, Banks’s legal battle will likely attract major public attention, both for the charges and the broader dialogue on the intersections between music, street culture, and violence. His arraignment, along with the other defendants, is expected to occur soon in Los Angeles, marking a significant legal chapter in the life of one of drill rap’s most prominent figures.
