Hurricane Oscar Threatens Cuba with Flooding Rains and Intense Winds

Hurricane Oscar is making a serious approach toward Cuba, bringing with it the potential for heavy rainfall and strong winds. This storm formed rapidly in the southwestern Atlantic on Saturday, catching meteorologists by surprise with how quickly it intensified. It leaped from tropical storm status to hurricane strength in just a few hours, becoming the season’s 15th named storm. Right now, Hurricane Oscar is southwest of Great Inagua Island, with wind speeds of around 130 km/h (85 mph) and is expected to reach eastern Cuba by Sunday afternoon.

Although Oscar is a small hurricane, with hurricane-force winds extending only 10 km from its center, it is highly volatile, and its intensity can shift without much warning. As of Sunday morning, forecasters warn that Oscar could still strengthen slightly before making landfall in Cuba, where it's likely to bring dangerous conditions. The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued hurricane warnings for parts of Cuba, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the southeastern Bahamas. Rainfall could reach up to 375 mm (14.7 inches) in some areas of Cuba, posing a serious risk of flash flooding.

Cuba is already facing a national crisis due to widespread power outages following the failure of its largest power plant. Millions are still without electricity, with limited progress in restoring power, leaving the country in a vulnerable state. Cuban authorities, led by President Miguel Díaz-Canel, are working around the clock to protect people and key resources ahead of the storm. With the power grid already fragile and basic services like public transport disrupted, the arrival of Oscar only adds to the growing strain on the country.

While the U.S. and Canada are not in the immediate path of the storm, Cuba and nearby islands are bracing for the worst. With heavy rains expected through Monday and Tuesday, it remains crucial for residents to follow safety guidelines and keep informed as the situation develops.
