Late Drama as Sunderland and Leeds Draw in Thrilling 2-2 Encounter
In a pulsating EFL Championship clash at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland and Leeds United played out an intense 2-2 draw, marked by an extraordinary last-minute error from Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier. The game had everything – goals, drama, and a moment of madness that left Leeds fans in disbelief.
Sunderland took an early lead through their young star Chris Rigg. The 17-year-old midfielder was in the right place at the right time, converting from close range just nine minutes in. Sunderland, buoyed by the home crowd, started brightly, and it looked like Leeds would struggle to match their intensity. However, Leeds quickly regrouped, and in the 22nd minute, Joel Piroe, with a perfect header from a Willy Gnonto cross, leveled the score. It was a well-executed move, bringing Leeds back into the game and signaling that this match would be anything but straightforward.

The second half saw Leeds take the lead in the 56th minute through Junior Firpo, again with an assist from Gnonto. Firpo, making a rare appearance on the scoresheet, slotted home with precision, putting Leeds ahead and seemingly in control of the game. Leeds appeared to have settled into a rhythm, dictating much of the play from that point onward.
However, the game took an incredible turn in the dying moments. Deep into stoppage time, a seemingly harmless ball from Sunderland substitute Alan Browne was sent into the box. Meslier, who had earlier been treated for a head injury, made a catastrophic mistake, allowing the ball to slip past him and into the net. Sunderland couldn’t believe their luck, while Leeds were left devastated. The 97th-minute own goal handed Sunderland a point they scarcely expected to take at that stage.
The result sees Sunderland retain their spot at the top of the Championship table, while Leeds, who were moments away from sharing the lead with the Black Cats, now sit in third. For Meslier, this mistake will haunt him during the international break, as Leeds missed a golden opportunity to go joint top. His teammates tried to console him at the final whistle, but the blunder was a cruel reminder of how unpredictable and unforgiving football can be.
The match also highlighted the growing quality in both teams, with Sunderland’s resilience under new coach Regis Le Bris and Leeds’ attacking flair keeping fans on the edge of their seats. While Sunderland will celebrate their tenacity and persistence, Leeds will rue a night where their hard work was undone by an unfortunate lapse in concentration. Nevertheless, both teams remain firmly in the race for promotion, with plenty of twists and turns left in the season ahead.
