Massive Blaze at Langley Restaurant Leads to Building Collapse
A devastating fire erupted at a restaurant in downtown Langley City early this morning, leading to significant structural damage and a partial building collapse. Fire crews responded promptly, receiving the initial call shortly after 6:30 a.m. regarding a small exterior fire at the restaurant located at 20559 Fraser Highway. Upon arrival, firefighters were met with light smoke, but it quickly became apparent that a much larger fire was raging inside the establishment. Fire Chief Scott Kennedy stated that the blaze likely started towards the back of the restaurant, where they discovered a large volume of fire.
As the fire spread, it compromised the integrity of the building, causing the front to collapse and raising concerns about further structural failures, particularly the roof. Chief Kennedy noted that they faced several localized collapses during their operations, prompting the decision to retreat and adopt a defensive firefighting strategy. This approach prioritizes the safety of the firefighters while attempting to control the fire from a distance. The condition of the building, being older and significantly damaged, left the fire crews with no choice but to proceed with caution.

The Langley fire department is mobilizing numerous resources to combat this dangerous situation. Chief Kennedy mentioned that they have called in additional personnel, including career staff and volunteers from Langley Township, to ensure adequate coverage and maintain safety during the firefighting efforts. This collaborative approach aims to keep the crew fresh and efficient as they tackle the ongoing blaze.
Compounding the challenges, the Langley RCMP has cordoned off sections of the surrounding area due to concerns that the smoke may contain toxic chemicals, including asbestos. Authorities have been proactive in communicating with local residents, advising them to keep windows and doors closed and wear masks outdoors. The smoke has created a noticeable haze, impacting air quality even in areas far from the incident, with reports of visibility issues as far away as South Surrey.
As firefighters continue to battle the blaze, investigations into the cause of the fire remain ongoing. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported at this time. However, this situation serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of fires and the vital role that our emergency services play in protecting the community. As the day progresses, efforts will focus not only on extinguishing the fire but also on assessing the damage and ensuring the safety of all involved. This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
