Montell Douglas’ Courageous Journey: From Pain to Empowerment on Strictly Come Dancing
Montell Douglas, a name that resonates with excellence and determination, has recently captured hearts as a contestant on the beloved show Strictly Come Dancing . However, beneath the dazzling sequins and captivating choreography lies a story of resilience that many may not be aware of. Montell, a former Olympian, has bravely opened up about her long-standing battle with severe menstrual pain that once landed her in the hospital.
At 38, Montell has not only made history as the first British woman to compete in both Summer and Winter Olympics but has also become an inspirational figure for many women facing similar struggles. Despite her impressive athletic background as a sprinter and bobsledder, she candidly admits that she has faced her own physical challenges. For years, Montell suffered from extremely painful and heavy periods, which she initially believed were just a normal part of being a woman. The pain she experienced was so intense that it often prevented her from participating in crucial training sessions.

In her words, Montell reflects, “I didn’t really moan about it; I thought it was something you just had to deal with.” However, this perception began to change after a particularly harrowing experience a few years ago when the pain escalated to the point where she required hospitalization. Describing the experience, she recalls, “My body just started convulsing, and I was almost passing out because the pain was so intense.” This eye-opening moment served as a wake-up call, prompting Montell to seek medical intervention and eventually leading to a significant improvement in her condition.
Montell’s experience has propelled her to advocate for awareness surrounding menstrual health. She recently collaborated with Bupa Health Clinic to launch the ‘Period Plan’ service, urging young women to trust their instincts and seek help if they’re experiencing discomfort. “Trust your gut – your feelings are valid,” she emphasizes, encouraging others to recognize that what they experience may not be the norm and to ask questions for better understanding.
Now, as she dazzles on the dance floor with her partner Johannes Radebe, Montell faces a new set of challenges. She humorously admits that navigating the dance floor in high heels has been the most difficult aspect of her experience on Strictly . “It’s the shoes. It’s doing it in a shoe that wants to break your foot,” she jokes, acknowledging the pain that comes with wearing such footwear. Yet, through it all, her determination shines through as she immerses herself fully in the experience, expressing, “You get to only do it once, so you might as well go hard or go home.”
In a world where many women silently endure their struggles, Montell Douglas stands out as a beacon of hope and empowerment. Her journey illustrates the importance of speaking up, seeking support, and breaking the stigma surrounding women’s health issues. As she continues her Strictly Come Dancing journey, Montell inspires us all to embrace our challenges and seek the help we deserve. With her courage and newfound confidence, she not only dances but also shines brightly, proving that resilience is the ultimate dance of life.
