McDonald's Brings Back the McRib to the UK After Nearly a Decade

The McRib, a nostalgic favorite from the 1980s, has finally made its return to McDonald's menus across the UK, bringing back memories for longtime fans. For many, this has been a long-awaited comeback. Despite mixed reviews from some food critics, the McRib has certainly managed to spark excitement. Its brief appearance is a great chance for those who have fond memories of it—or those who have never tried it—to see what the fuss is all about.

I recently visited a McDonald's in Somerset to try the McRib for myself. Honestly, I usually steer clear of fast-food chains when reviewing food, but curiosity got the better of me. Pulling into the drive-thru, I noticed promotions for other seasonal items like a Halloween-themed McFlurry and a new Toffee Apple Pie, but the McRib was the star of the menu. I ordered the medium meal, which came in at a hefty £6.99, leaving me wondering if it would live up to its price tag.

The McRib consists of a boneless pork patty, slathered with BBQ sauce and topped with onions and gherkins, all served in a soft bun. It sounds good in theory, but my first impression wasn’t the best. For one, the BBQ sauce was pretty scarce, so I had to add extra to get the taste right. The burger itself was decent, but the overall flavor was nothing extraordinary. It lacked the punch you would expect from a meal priced close to £7.

Despite McDonald’s making a point to train staff specifically on how to cook the McRib (to ensure the pork and beef juices don’t mix on the grill), the experience fell short for me. The McRib might have been a hit in the '80s, but this version felt like a shadow of its former self. Onions and gherkins were also minimal, leaving the sandwich a bit bland and lacking in texture.

Still, it’s not all bad. If you're a fan of nostalgic flavors and fast food, you might enjoy giving the McRib a try, especially if you’ve been waiting for its return. That said, if you’re looking for something more satisfying, you might want to consider other options, or perhaps even try recreating it at home for a better flavor experience.

Would I go for it again? Probably not. I was left feeling underwhelmed, and in hindsight, I wish I'd opted for the marshmallow latte instead.
